Primm to Las Vegas

After spending the night in the rest area, I moved on to Primm and stayed the night at Whiskey Pete’s Hotel & Casino. Primm is a strange, soulless, casino-owned swath of desert land that’s always baffled me. There are three sizable hotels/casinos. Three huge gas stations. A giant shopping outlet. Apartments for the workers. And all of it is owned by MGM Mirage. The Chevrons are owned by MGM Mirage. The Subways inside the Chevrons are owned by MGM Mirage. All three casinos. Everything.

And it always strikes me, with all our human ingenuity—everything we’ve learned throughout the course of our history—one of our greatest and most absurd achievements is putting these stupid, urban, hedonistic mammoths out in the middle of the desert.
